The fame of the Carnac megaliths in Brittany has quite overshadowed the fact that all except the east of France is rich in neolithic monuments. Around Saumur, on the river Loire, huge dolmens that probably never were covered with earth can be found. In the south-west, in the Languedoc/Rousillon region there are more chambered mounds than in the whole of England and Wales. Also dolmens on the top of natural hillocks and surrounded by rings of standing stone-slabs can be found.
